Iâd taken every precaution I could think of and hadnât noticed anything off. The catering staff had checked out okay. The DJ was a guy Iâd gone to high school with, so I knew he wasnât a threat, and I recognized the vast majority of people in attendance thanks to growing up right here in Broken Bend. As far as I could tell, Freddie hadnât made the trip to Texas and Seraphina was safe.
In my line of business, that still wasnât enough to warrant letting down my guard. So when Seraphina got up to hit the dance floor for a fast song with the women in the wedding party, I stood to the side. She looked like sheâd shed some of her inhibitions. A few glasses of sparkling wine probably helped. With her hands in the air and her hips swaying back and forth, she looked like a woman having a great time at a family wedding. I liked this version of her. Liked it too damn much.
The song ended, and she gravitated my way, her heels dangling from her fingers. âI forgot how much fun letting loose can be. You should try it sometime.â
I laughed. âTonightâs not the night. Not when Iâm on the job.â
A slow song started playing. Couples drifted to the dance floor, and the lights dimmed.
Seraphina reached my side. âThatâs right. Iâm just a job.â
âHey,ââI wrapped my fingers around her arm to steady herââthatâs not what I meant.â Her skin was cool, so soft it made me want to skim my palms over her arms and feel them wrap around me.
âI suppose if Iâm technically your employer for the next few hours, I can boss you into dancing with me.â Her eyebrows arched. âWe need to keep up appearances, donât we?â
I glanced around the perimeter of the dance floor. No one was paying a bit of attention to the two of us. It would be easy to lead her outside for a return ride to the bed-and-breakfast. But a part of me wanted to know what it would feel like to hold her in my arms, even if just for a few minutes. Against my better judgement, I took her heels from her fingers and reached for her hand.
Her eyes went wide as I led her onto the dance floor. Then she rested her arms on my chest and linked her hands behind my neck. I pulled her against me, her soft curves aligning with the hard planes of my body. The music played, but I wasnât paying attention to the song. Iâd lost myself in her arms.
I bent my head, nudging my nose into her hair. This woman was heaven, and she smelled like the garden of Eden. In the moment, I overlooked the temptation she represented and tightened my grip around her waist. The song ended and flowed into another with a faster tempo. Still, we held each other, both of us swaying to a beat no one else could hear. Without thinking, I brushed my lips against her temple.
